In 2017, retail took a hit with once-prominent retailers including Toys ‘R’ Us, Radio Shack, HHGregg, The Limited, and Payless, declaring bankruptcy and shuttering stores.
One bright spot was Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods in the second quarter, which was a major game-changer, triggering a trend in unifying retail and e-tail. Walmart followed the Amazon move by partnering with grocery service Deliv in some areas and making its products available on Google Express. Others, like Costco, have launched an online service, Kohl’s is offering in-store Amazon departments in some locations, and Target’s partnership with several online companies such as mattress retailer Casper and pet supply company Bark foreshadow more retail/e-tail efforts.
